The list was compiled from hands-on testing data, expert consensus from publications like PCMag, user reviews, and an evaluation of each device's performance, integration capabilities, and overall value.
1. Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro — Best Overall for Integration
The Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro earns the top spot by solving two smart home problems in a single device: security and connectivity. It is best for the tech-savvy user who wants a powerful, centralized foundation for their smart home. The device functions as a high-resolution, weather-resistant outdoor security camera, providing sharp 2K video, color night vision, and AI-powered motion detection. According to testing by PCMag, which gave it a 4.5 "Outstanding" rating, it is the top overall pick for monitoring a home from a phone.
What elevates the G5 Pro above other security cameras is its secondary function as a multi-protocol smart home hub. With built-in support for Matter, Thread, and Zigbee, it can directly connect and control a wide range of other smart devices, from lights to sensors, eliminating the need for multiple single-purpose hubs. This consolidation is its key advantage over competitors that offer only security features. The primary drawback is its complexity; leveraging its full potential as a hub requires a deeper understanding of smart home protocols than a simple plug-and-play device.
